First Visits

Your First Visit

Getting Started:

At Prime Physiotherapy, our policy is to see all new patients as soon as possible. We may be able to see you on the same day if our schedules permit. This policy ensures that your needs are addressed immediately, so you can feel better, faster. What to bring to your first visit at our clinic:

  • Doctors Referral (if you have one, although one is not needed)
  • Insurance information (if due to a car accident, please provide the relevant claim numbers and adjuster contact information if applicable)
  • Pre-filled documents which have been emailed to you
  • A list of any medications you are taking

Please inform the office administration if your injury claim will be submitted to DVA/RCMP services so that appropriate paperwork can be filled out. How to prepare for your first visit:

Please come with appropriate clothing for the assessment and treatment. This may include shorts or loose fitting pants for hips/knees/ankle injuries, or a tanktop/sports bra for spinal/shoulder injuries. Please bring running shoes. Please come 10-15 min early to ensure you have filled out all necessary forms and paperwork.

What to expect on your first visit:

You will be greeted by our helpful receptionist who may verify some of your information. Next, you will be interviewed by your therapist to review your medical history and symptoms. This may include:

  1. What types of symptoms are you experiencing?
    • What aggravates and eases these symptoms?
    • How long have you been having these symptoms?
    • How did your symptoms start?
    • Have you ever had physical therapy or other treatments before? If so, what was the result?
  2. You will next undergo a physical exam, where your therapist will look at your movement and function including: strength, mobility and flexibility. This helps to determine the possible origins of your condition, and how to best direct the course of treatment. Often patients will present with more than one injury site. Please bring this to the attention of the attending physiotherapist. That knowledge may be important to treating your primary concern, or it may be something that needs to be addressed on a follow-up appointment.
  3. Your therapist will fully educate you on your condition and explain how they will help you treat it. You will collaborate on goals that you will achieve during your course of therapy. We welcome questions at this point and our therapists are happy to provide you with details you may want to know.

Treatment normally begins on the same day as your initial evaluation. This is why the initial assessment appointment often takes about one hour.

Often, an individualized home exercise program will be given. It is essential to your quick recovery to adhere to this program. If you have questions about this program, please feel free to contact the physiotherapist or kinesiologist who was working with you at any time.

The last step is to check out and schedule any follow-up appointments. These are important to assess whether your condition is improving, and to further progress your treatment plan. Please consult with your physiotherapist regarding if and when to book in for follow-up appointments.
