PRIME Physiotherapy

Kinesiology is the study of human movement. A kinesiologist applies the sciences of biomechanics, anatomy, physiology, psychology, and neuroscience to assess movement patterns.

Kinesiologists understand injuries and how they affect the body’s movement. They are able to develop a training program that won’t affect the injury, and in most cases, will help to improve the injury. Kinesiologists are trained to modify exercises according to the changes in your body, providing a program that is ever-evolving.

At PRIME, our kinesiologists’ primary goal is to optimize functional movement through individualized exercise programs and ongoing analysis. We place emphasis on understanding each client through one on one sessions focused on continued education of proper movement mechanics and overall physical health. We work closely with our physiotherapists to provide continuity of care, as we believe in interdisciplinary rehabilitation.

Our kinesiologists work with various populations, regardless of their athletic background. Kinesiologists have proven to be beneficial throughout the injury management spectrum, as well as assisting healthy individuals looking for injury prevention for their sport or lifestyle. They treat those suffering from injuries related to, but not limited to, motor vehicle accidents, bone and joint disorders, post-surgical rehabilitation and pre-surgical preparation.

All cases begin with an assessment, with sessions typically ranging from 30-60 minutes depending on the individual. We treat using various strengthening and mobility techniques.

We expect clients to show up ready to work hard and be challenged according to their capabilities. To best serve our clients, we offer sessions based in our gym, in a pool (hydrotherapy), or even home visits. We also provide services to sporting events and teams, where we work on location or in the gym. Most often, clients can expect to be given at-home exercises to complete with minimal equipment, to compliment one on one training and speed up results. Our kinesiologists strive to accommodate all schedules, knowing that not everyone can commit to the same day and time each week.

Our kinesiologists offer a variety of options for private training sessions, ranging from one on one sessions, to partner or small group training, to team training. Some private insurance companies are recognizing the benefit of kinesiology sessions for overall health and wellness, so check your personal benefits to see if you are covered.

We have developed transitional programs from water based exercises to land based exercises to facilitate a wide range of clients in reaching their optimal level of performance. The program has been extremely beneficial in helping individuals recover from a wide range of injuries from sports, motor vehicle accidents, work related and post surgical. Each program is tailored to help the client get back into the activities they enjoyed prior to the injury. Hydrotherapy increases range of motion, allowing the performance of certain exercises and movements which may not be possible on land. The sessions are one on one and each client receives a custom program to follow that is altered based on improvements.

If you’ve been injured in a motor vehicle accident (includes motorcycle, bicycle, pedestrian accidents), and are insured by ICBC, you are eligible for kinesiology treatments through ICBC with a doctor’s referral. ICBC refers to these sessions as “active rehabilitation”. They are typically recommended towards the end of your physiotherapy sessions, although may be recommended sooner in conjunction with physiotherapy. ICBC covers a portion of your sessions up front, for which our clinic bills directly. You are responsible for paying the $20 user fee per session but keep your receipts to submit to ICBC for reimbursement when your claim is settled.

If you’ve been injured in a workplace accident and are covered by Worksafe BC, you are eligible for up to 5 hydrotherapy kinesiology sessions if appropriate under the supervision of a physiotherapist. There is no cost to you for treatment under WSBC.
